The Origin Story
OpenAI started as a non-profit research lab, positioned as a counterweight to Google's growing dominance in AI. The founding team — which included Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, and others — believed that AGI was coming, and that it should be developed in the open, with safety as a first priority rather than an afterthought.

ChatGPT: The Product That Changed Everything
ChatGPT launched on November 30, 2022, and reached 100 million users within two months — the fastest adoption of any consumer product in history. For context, it took Instagram two and a half years and TikTok nine months to reach the same milestone.
The initial version used GPT-3.5 and was, honestly, pretty basic. It hallucinated facts confidently, couldn't access the internet, and had a knowledge cutoff date that made current-events questions frustrating. But the interface — a simple chat window where you could ask for anything and get a coherent response — was revolutionary. It made AI accessible to non-technical people in a way that no previous tool had.
Subsequent updates added GPT-4 access, web browsing, DALL-E image generation, Code Interpreter (now Advanced Data Analysis), custom GPTs, and memory features. The product evolved from a tech demo into a genuine productivity tool used by writers, developers, analysts, educators, and millions of casual users.
